Football writer Henry Winter on BBC Radio 5 live:  "The Premier League, despite the money, is not necessarily the most obvious attraction for the top players in Europe, particularly in a tournament year. They don't want to come to a country which doesn't have a winter break, because they know they'll be exhausted when the real prize - the European Championship - is up for grabs. And also, English clubs haven't done very well in the Champions League, and that has inhibited the desire of players to come here, because they want the top honours."

It's been a while since Italian clubs were breaking transfer records but away from the Premier League, the next highest spending league was Serie A, with a gross spend of £405m.

La Liga was next with a gross spend of £400m, followed by the Bundesliga with £290m and Ligue 1 with £220m.

"When I left Arsenal 10 years ago, they were dominating the Premier League. We went unbeaten through a whole Premier League season. The fans got used to seeing trophies coming through. I thought that club were going to take off and charge through Europe.

"The fans got used to that, and there's a frustration now because they had to lower their expectations because of the expenditure on the stadium. When the fans see the money in the bank, there really is a frustration, because now there's no excuse in those terms. But the top players don't seem to be available, or Arsenal don't want to spend those fees on those players.

"I feel it's a missed opportunity - because the Premier League, without Manchester City there, is almost there for the taking. If you could put it together now and go on a run, then you can do something. Arsenal might go on a run anyway, but it's probably unlikely."

The Premier League is keeping Europe in business - to a certain extent.

Of the record £870m spent by Premier League clubs this summer, £585m flowed straight out of the country to foreign clubs.

Kevin De Bruyne's £50m+ move being the biggest example. 

Scott Holland:  re: Michal's comment. Cristiano Ronaldo cost £12m. Far cry from up to £50m. Nobody moaned either.

David Wynde:  Not upset with Spurs. Bought Alderweireld, Trippier and Wimmer early. Added N'Jie and Son later. No panic buys.

David Mackay:  I think Kevin De Bruyne will prove to be one of the signings of the season. Great signing for Manchester City.

• Premier League clubs concluded player acquisitions totalling around £90m on deadline day. The equivalent deadline day figure in the summer 2014 was around £85m.

"I'm undecided about the criticism Arsene Wenger has faced over his lack of transfer activity. He gets the plaudits, deservedly, for bringing through young players and showing faith in them. Then he gets mullered for not replacing them with better players. 

"It's a fine balance for a manager - because not many players are happy with playing in the League Cup, and the odd Champions League game against a nobody, and against Norwich at home occasionally. They want to play every week. 

"So I'm a bit torn. I think Arsenal do need better players, but are they then going to stop the younger players coming through, like at Chelsea?"

You can't get better value than a free transfer to be honest, and he's scored three goals already.

Football writer Henry Winter on BBC Radio 5 live: "I've interviewed Saido Berahino a couple of times and he's a fascinating character. This is a kid who comes from Burundi, a country that was ripped apart by civil war. He lost his father, and he's still not talked much in public about that.

"This is not a kid who's been manipulated by an agent. He's moved away from Aidy Ward, who he was closely involved with before. He is a willful, intelligent kid, who has seen a lot of the world - certainly far more than I have."

"He had to leave his country as a refugee. He came over here, and went into a holding centre in south London and waited for two months to be reunited with his mother and his sister. Berahino has been searching for a father figure, and Tony Pulis has been good for him as a person.

"He will get the ritual character assassination that a player gets when they put tweets out like that. It was a very ill-advised tweet. But I think Berahino should direct some of his anger at Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur. If you want a player that much, you pay the proper money for him."

Times journalist Rory Smith on BBC Radio 5 live: "I always like to refute James Corden, and I don't agree with him when he says that has been the best transfer deadline day ever for West Ham. You shouldn't be signing four players on deadline day; it suggests you haven't done your work early enough."

From Alex:  A lot of Manchester United fans will be disappointed about the lack of firepower, but let's give Martial a chance, and see if he can shine in English football. Let's be honest, not many people know about this kid.

From Mac, in Scotland:  Does anyone know what Charlie Austin has done to upset EVERY Premier League manager? Can't understand any other reason nobody paid £15m for him.

From Johnathan:  As an Arsenal fan, I've no complaints if the quality target player is not available at the right price in this window. I'd prefer to see a reduced ticket price at the Emirates than senseless overvalued and overpaid signings.
