Colchester United have received a "joke" bid from Championship side Bristol City for midfielder Alex Gilbey, says U's boss Kevin Keen.

Last week, Keen said 21-year-old Gilbey, who has scored twice in 29 games this campaign, has the potential to be a Premier League player.

"There has been an offer but it's absolute joke of an offer in my eyes," Keen told BBC Essex.

"The offer is far, far under our valuation."

Gilbey played as Colchester lost 3-0 at managerless Scunthorpe on Saturday to leave the U's seven points adrift of safety in League One.

The club has failed to win in the six league games since Keen came into his first managerial role just before Christmas and are without a league victory since 20 October.

However the Essex side has reached the FA Cup fourth round where they will host Tottenham on Saturday.

"I think there's a massive mental side to it, the team is not on the best of runs," said Keen.

"I've tried to change a few things, maybe I need to look at myself and the way I've tried to do things and have a re-think.

"Since I've been into the club we haven't won a league game, maybe I need to come up with something different."
