Jonjo Shelvey: Stand-in Newcastle United captain wants to inspire safety push

England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey wants to inspire Newcastle United to Premier League safety in his role as captain while Fabricio Coloccini is injured.
Argentina defender Coloccini is out with a calf injury, and Shelvey has taken the armband in his absence.
The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table, although level on 24 points with two other teams.
"It's something I want to do, I'm up for the fight," the 24-year-old told BBC Newcastle.
"I want to lead this team to safety. There's a lot of pressure, obviously where the team lies in the league the table doesn't lie."
Shelvey, who has captained England at various age groups and deputised for Ashley Williams during his Swansea career, is keen to repay Steve McClaren's faith in signing him in January and making him skipper.
"The more times I'm captain it gives me that belief, the fact the club has faith in me," he added.
"I'm vocal on and off the pitch I can lead the team and it's something I want to take in my stride. I've always been instilled by my dad to be a leader, I welcome it with open arms.
"I'm not saying I want to take it from Colo, but when he's not around, I'm more than happy to take the armband and lead this great club."
