Jersey Premiership: Title to be decided by play-off after top two win

Scottish led the Premiership for much of the season but were pegged back by St Paul's

St Paul's and Jersey Scottish won on an exciting final day of the Jersey Premiership season to finish joint top and set up a title-decider play-off.

The sides had gone into the weekend level on 31 points.

Reigning champions St Paul's, hoping to be crowned champions for the third consecutive year, beat Jersey Wanderers 3-1, while the Scots were 3-0 winners over St John.

The extra match to decide who takes the title is on Tuesday at St Peter.

Jordan Rea hammered in the opener for the Scots after eight minutes at St John to settle any nerves.

A second-half own goal doubled the advantage, and Elliot Poole netted from outside the area in injury time to complete the win.

"It wasn't a great day for playing great football on that surface, but we'll take the 3-0 and take the three points," Scottish boss Pat Brennan told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I expect it'll be a tight game [on Tuesday], I'm sure it'll be physical and whoever puts in the best performance will get the result and they'll deserve it."

Meanwhile, at St Saviour, St Paul's took the lead when Chris Andrews turned the ball into his own net from a Jack Cannon corner.

Cannon made it 2-0 when he stabbed the ball home, latching onto a defensive header that was too short for teenage Wanderers goalkeeper Dan Birrell.

Josh Daniel's header at the other end went under Euan van der Vliet to narrow the deficit, but midfielder Luke Watson netted in injury time to set up Tuesday's decider before being shown the red card moments later for a foul near halfway, his second bookable offence.

"We think he [Watson] should be ok for Tuesday night, but two weeks after that these suspensions usually start," said St Paul's manager Paul Brannan.

"If we were to win on Tuesday, the risk is the Upton match [against the Guernsey champions] and he'd probably miss that."

In Saturday's only other Premiership game in Jersey, Neil Langdon and Stewart Daynes both scored twice as St Ouen ended the campaign with a thumping 7-0 win over bottom side St Clement.
