Jon McCarthy: Chester confirm managerial appointment

Chester have named former York City, Port Vale, Birmingham City and Northern Ireland winger Jon McCarthy as their new manager on a one-year deal.

McCarthy, who was assistant to previous manager Steve Burr, took temporary charge when Burr was sacked in April.

Chester won three and lost one of his four games as caretaker, as he guided City to National League safety and a final position of 17th in the table.

"To be given the job, it's an honour," said 45-year-old McCarthy.

"Everybody has got behind me - all the staff and the board, and also the fans. It's given me a lot of belief to put together an application.

"The way that people have taken on board what we have been trying to do and believe in it has been great."

There is an option in the contract to extend McCarthy's one-year deal by a further 12 months.
