Guernsey women offered chance to play in England by Ormer FC

Guernsey's best women footballers could play in an English league in the season after next.

Ormer FC, a youth club that arranges matches on the mainland, is setting up a women's side with the intention of playing in Hampshire.

Ormer Ladies will play friendlies next season in order to find their level before entering a league in 2017-18.

There is currently no league football for women in Guernsey, with the island side losing 9-0 to Jersey last month.

"Ten years ago the Guernsey league was thriving, but it went down to nine-a-side and then seven-a-side and last year collapsed completely," Ormer FC chairman Wayne Du Port told BBC Sport.

"Women's football is one of the biggest-evolving sports in the world thanks to the popularity of thing like the Olympics and Women's World Cup.

"It's given a lot of inspiration to girls around the island and it's developing everywhere else, but not in Guernsey.

"In this day and age not to have any football at all is quite unbelievable especially when the sport is thriving everywhere else."

Ormer currently has an under-12s side playing in the Junior Premier League - which includes professional and amateur clubs from around the Midlands and south of England.

In the past season, the club have played teams representing West Bromwich Albion, Mansfield Town and Kidderminster Harriers.

"They need to find a league where they'll be challenged in every game," said Du Port.

"There's a lot of 12-14 year-olds taking up the sport, but there's no pathway for them to go.

"Hopefully these girls coming through will have something to aim for and eventually the Guernsey league can thrive again."
