Shrewsbury Town: Summer signings set to lift club to 'next level', says Junior Brown

Defender Junior Brown says the standard of Shrewsbury Town's new signings this summer should help the club have a more comfortable time next season.

Town boss Micky Mellon has brought in six players so far after guiding the club to League One safety by one place and four points last term.

"We're building well, with the acquisitions over the summer," Brown, 27, told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We'll definitely look a lot higher and finish a lot better next season."

Mellon has wasted little time in re-shaping his squad at Greenhous Meadow ahead of the new campaign with three players arriving from Port Vale - defender Ryan McGivern, midfielder Louis Dodds and striker AJ Leitch-Smith.

In addition, Fleetwood winger Antoni Sarcevic, Southend midfielder Gary Deegan and Rochdale defender Oliver Lancashire have also moved to Shropshire.

Brown, who signed a new undisclosed-length contract last week, says there is already a buzz around the club.

"There's a few new faces but there's some excitement with that," Brown said.

"I know a couple of the lads who've come in and some others know each other already so that'll make things easier and we'll come together quicker. We've got the right balance of what you need to get to the next level."

Brown relishing Sadler scrap

Brown himself is looking forward to staking a claim for a place in the first team after his 2015-16 season was ended by a knee injury in April.

"It was upsetting and difficult to take," Brown said.

"Sads (Mat Sadler) came in an did exceptionally well - he's such a good lad.

"It'll be difficult now because I've got to prove myself and get my place back and it's going to be an interesting battle."
