League One side Bury have signed former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a one-year deal after he left Preston.

The 35-year-old had a trial with the Shakers last summer, but instead joined Preston and played five games for them.

Kirkland started his career at Coventry City and has also played for Liverpool, West Brom, Wigan, Leicester, Doncaster and Sheffield Wednesday.

He has joined former Bradford keeper Ben Williams in moving to Gigg Lane this summer.
