Bristol City: Jamie McAllister excited by Under-21 coach role

Former Scotland left-back Jamie McAllister has urged Bristol City's youngsters to be ready for first-team chances after becoming Under-21 coach.

The Uefa A Licence coach called time on his playing career at Exeter - who he joined in January - to pursue coaching.

McAllister, 38, spent six years as a player at Ashton Gate, starting 179 league games.

"It's a great opportunity for me. I'm buzzing, so excited to be here," the ex-Aberdeen man told BBC Radio Bristol.

"It's the next step in my career. I've got great memories from being here as a player and hopefully I can replicate the experiences as a coach."

After his spell with the Robins and two seasons at Yeovil Town, McAllister's playing career included a year with Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters before he joined Exeter.

"The (Under-21 squad) here have got ability - it's just getting the best out of them. I hope I can pass on my experience and help them," he said.

"The gaffer showed last year there's a pathway for them. If you're good enough, you're old enough.

"I want to stress to them, the opportunity to play in the first team is not too far away. Be willing to learn, improve and come in every day with a smile on your face."

McAllister also previously played for Hearts, Livingston and Queen of the South.
