Defeat at Grimsby made it three losses on the trot for Newport and boss Warren Feeney was sacked

Newport County director Gavin Foxall says the club are hoping to appoint a new manager next week.

Warren Feeney was sacked on Wednesday with Newport bottom of League Two having won only once this season.

Foxall is confident in making an appointment before Newport face Colchester United on 8 October.

"We'll be speaking to a few people over the weekend with a view on making an appointment next Thursday," Foxall told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

Foxall says there has been widespread interest in the vacancy, though former Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill has rejected the post.

"We met as a board last night. We've had a flood of people show an interest. And there are people that we've shown an interest in," Foxall said.

"We need someone with experience. The manager that we've parted company with [Feeney] didn't have that experience.

"It's a difficult league and we need to get out of the position that we're in."

Feeney was appointed manager in January, promoted from being assistant manager after previous boss John Sheridan left for Oldham Athletic.

Foxall says the Exiles had no option but to part company with Feeney after the club won just one of their past 22 League Two fixtures.

"It's a results game. The decision wasn't personal. We need to make sure that this club doesn't go down," Foxall said.

"The Football League status gives us many different things. The financial support is significant. We've got to maintain that."
