Guernsey FC: 8-1 defeat for youngest-ever island side at Hythe Town

Guernsey FC suffered their second-worst defeat in their history as they were beaten 8-1 at Hythe Town.

The youngest-ever squad assembled by boss Tony Vance were 3-0 down at half-time and only got on the scoresheet in the 88th minute through Bristol City loanee Jake Andrews.

The loss extended Guernsey's winless away run to 25 matches. They last won away from Guernsey in December 2015.

Guernsey's only heavier defeat was an 8-0 loss at Merstham in November 2014.

"We've got to appreciate here that this is the youngest team we've every had and we had two senior players in Simon Geall and Sam Cochrane, who hasn't played for four months," Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"The rest of the were 19 and 20 year-olds and they'll be better for that."

The loss means Guernsey are still one place and five points away from the relegation zone in Isthmian League Division One South.

"If you look at the way we gifted them goals, that was the most frustrating thing about tonight," added Vance.

"Of the eight, they probably earned about one or two of them, you can't gift goals like that.

"You want to try to stay in the game as long as you can when you're away, that was the plan and I didn't see too much I was concerned about. Before you know it, we've given away really poor goals and after that we were in trouble."
