Dundee 0-0 Kilmarnock

Dundee earned their first Scottish Premiership point in six matches with a draw goalless draw against Kilmarnock.

The Dees - who remain bottom of the table - had lost their five previous fixtures and struggled to create chances in a match of scant quality.

Their goalkeeper, Elliot Parish, denied Lee Erwin, with Killie's Eamonn Brophy striking the bar late on.

Dundee finished with 10 men when captain Darren O'Dea was shown a second yellow card for felling Rory McKenzie.

Killie sit 10th, three points clear of bottom spot.

Dundee gave a first start at left-back to Jon Aurtenexe. The only previous appearance from the former Athletic Bilbao defender had been as a substitute since his arrival at Dens Park in the summer.

The first half was a complete non-event as a spectacle, as both sides cancelled each other out. Almost all of the action was played in the middle of the pitch, which meant little in the way of excitement.

In the latter stages of the first half Jordan Jones scampered forward and evaded a couple of challenges before letting loose a shot high over the bar. It rather summed up proceedings.

Dundee striker Marcus Haber then got a header on target which was comfortably saved by Jamie MacDonald, as the match drifted away into a goalless half-time torpor.

Better surely had to come in the second half, but chances remained hard to come by.

Dundee forced some corners, but Kilmarnock defended stoutly as Neil McCann's men failed to find a cutting edge.

Kilmarnock replaced Kris Boyd and Chris Burke with Erwin and Brophy as they searched for something to spark their own attacking impetus.

From a loose ball in the box Brophy fired off a shot from six yards, but it was blocked by a posse of Dundee defenders.

Jones then played a perfect pass for Erwin who was one-on-one with the keeper as Kilmarnock finally showed some precision. Erwin got his shot away but he fired it straight at Parish.

At the other end Dundee sub Scott Allan hit a dangerous cross across goal but there were no takers.

And suddenly Dundee were down to 10 men, with a second yellow shown to O'Dea after a bringing down McKenzie on the edge of the box. From the free kick Alan Power fired a tame effort into the arms of Parish.

In stoppage time Brophy got the best chance of the game but his header came back off the bar.

Post-match reaction

Dundee manager Neil McCann: "First clean sheet of the season, which I am pleased about. I thought we completely dominated the first half, without really looking like we were going to penetrate too much. You can see how hard Kilmarnock have been working under Steve.

"I asked them in the second half to a little bit more aggressive in our forward play. To my mind Kilmarnock just played to hit us on the counter attack and indeed they had a great chance when Elliot Parish makes a super save. But I felt overall probably a point would be a fair reflection on the game."

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke: "A lot of honest endeavour from both teams. It looked like a game between two teams that haven't had the best of starts to the season. Probably a little bit of a fear of losing for both sides.

"The first half was pretty much a non-event. The second half opened up a little bit and obviously we're disappointed that we missed one great one-on-one at the end and young Eamonn Brophy came off the bench and had a good header that came off the crossbar, so maybe we're feeling a little bit hard done by that we could have nicked the three points."
