Shaun Derry: Cambridge United director says head coach will stay over Christmas

Cambridge United have not scored in seven away games, stretching back to 23 September

Cambridge United director Graham Daniels says head coach Shaun Derry will remain in charge of the team until at least the new year.

Dave Doggett resigned as U's chairman on Friday with ex-player Daniels, Shaun Grady and Steve Chamberlain overseeing the club on an interim basis.

The League Two side have won just one of their past eight games and no side has scored fewer goals in the division.

"Shaun Derry will be head coach over this Christmas period," Daniels said.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He is our head coach and will look after our team for a significant period in our season in the next eight days.

"Let me be really clear - I have met with Shaun Derry, I've asked him to make sure that over Christmas we perform to the best of our ability and play as attractive a brand of football as possible."

Former Leeds, Crystal Palace and QPR midfielder Derry, 40, was appointed Cambridge manager in November 2015.

The club are 13th in the fourth tier and start a run of four matches in eight days at second-placed Notts County on Saturday.

"My head is not in any sand - my head is focused on Christmas - it is a clear vision, I'm looking at exactly where we need to be at the end of Christmas," added Daniels.

"In January we will review the football side of this club, as any responsible leader of the football operation would do, and that's precisely what I intend to do."
