Women's Super League: Chelsea beat Manchester City, Arsenal stay top

Chelsea scored twice in three second-half minutes to come from behind and beat fellow Women's Super League title contenders Manchester City 2-1.

Chelsea replied to Caroline Weir's opener with goals from Beth England and Maren Mjelde to clinch their seventh win in eight league games this season.

That result temporarily took Chelsea top of the table, but Arsenal beat Reading 3-0 to reclaim top spot.

Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema scored twice for the Gunners.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Manchester United, Tottenham and Birmingham, while bottom club Liverpool scored from open play for the first time in the WSL this season to earn a point against West Ham.

Chelsea fight back to stun title rivals

Unbeaten Chelsea were good value for their victory at Kingsmeadow, with Weir's well-taken volley from a Keira Walsh cross coming after Mjelde and Ji So-yun had both struck the woodwork from 20 yards.

Visiting goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck also made fine stops from England and Ramona Bachmann, but a City defence which had conceded just one goal in their first 799 minutes of WSL action this season was breached twice in quick succession.

England headed in a rebound from Ji's shot to equalise for the hosts, and then turned provider with the cross for Mjelde to score the winner.

Chelsea now have a one-point cushion over City and are two behind Arsenal with a game in hand on both clubs.

Arsenal's win was much more routine, although the Gunners survived an early scare when Fara Williams forced Manuela Zinsberger into a smart save.

Miedema, who scored six times in Arsenal's WSL record 11-1 win over Bristol City seven days previously, twice lofted over the advancing Grace Moloney to score in each half.

That double sandwiched a superb team goal rounded off by a volley from Scotland midfielder Kim Little.

James stars in United victory

Lauren James produced an excellent individual display, scoring twice in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Everton.

James, whose brother Reece was in the Chelsea team beaten by Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, quickly equalised from close range for United after goalkeeper Mary Earps had punched a corner into her own net to give the visitors a second-minute lead.

Katie Zelem's penalty, given for a foul on James in the box, completed the turnaround and James fired in her second from 20 yards just before half-time.

A Victoria Williams own goal settled a game of few chances between Tottenham and Brighton in Spurs' favour, while goals from Lucy Whipp and Abbi Grant were enough for Birmingham to beat Bristol City 2-0.

Bristol City are only one point above bottom club Liverpool, who went behind early on against West Ham to Adriana Leon's tame strike, but fought back to get only their second point of the season.

Melissa Lawley wasted an excellent chance to equalise, sending a second-half penalty wide, but recovered from that disappointment to set up Niamh Charles for the leveller.
