Cambridge United 2-1 Colchester United

  • Published

Managerless Cambridge United came from behind to record a stunning late win against Colchester, who had been unbeaten in the league since October.

Luke Norris looked to have set the visitors on course for the points in the 67th minute when Cohen Bramall's corner was inadvertently helped on to him by Leon Davies and Norris guided a header into the top corner.

Cambridge equalised five minutes from time when George Maris played a superb pass forward to substitute Andrew Dallas, who fired across Dean Gerken and into the far corner.

Fellow sub Harvey Knibbs then completed a remarkable comeback a minute later to earn Cambridge their first win of 2020, guiding Davies' cross beyond Gerken with a header into the corner.

Chances had been scarce before the second-half drama, with Cambridge performing well under the guidance of interim boss Mark Bonner following Colin Calderwood's sacking on Wednesday.

The biggest chance had come five minutes before the break as Luke Prosser's stumble let Victor Adeboyejo in and his pull-back was just behind Idris El Mizouni, who could only direct his shot off-target.

Colchester slip a place to sixth in the table after their 16-match unbeaten run in League Two came to an end, while Cambridge climb two places to 16th.
