Harrogate Town advanced to the Carabao Cup second round on their debut in the competition as they beat Tranmere Rovers on penalties.

The Sulphurites won 8-7 on penalties as captain Josh Falkingham scored the winner after Manny Monthe missed.

Earlier, James Vaughan had put the hosts ahead after he rounded Joe Cracknell and tapped into an empty net.

But Town levelled when Lloyd Kerry fired a low shot on the edge of the box past Rovers goalkeeper Scott Davies.

It was a day to remember for Harrogate, who were also making their debut in an English Football League competition after winning promotion from the National League through the play-offs earlier this summer.

In a lengthy shoot-out, Jay Spearing initially had the chance to wrap up a Rovers win, but Town keeper Cracknell saved his spot kick before Falkingham later sealed their path to the next round.
