Greenock Morton 1-0 Alloa Athletic: Salkeld gives hosts winning start

  • Published

An early Cameron Salkeld goal launched Greenock Morton's Scottish Championship campaign with a win over Alloa Athletic as both sides finished with 10 men.

Midfielder Salkeld latched on to a Josh McPake pass to round goalkeeper Reece Willison and fire home 10 minutes in.

It came after Alloa had a strong penalty claim rejected when Lee Connolly appeared to be fouled.

Alloa's Steven Hetherington and McPake of Morton were dismissed within 10 second-half minutes for second yellows.

Morton manager David Hopkin: "We scored a fantastic goal and could have been 2-0 or 3-0 up by half-time. We started sitting deeper but managed the game brilliantly and defended well."

Alloa manager Peter Grant: "It was a stonewall penalty we should have been given and that summed up the officials' performance. It put us on the back foot but second half we were magnificent."
