Newport bossed possession but Carlisle just had the greater cutting edge

Jon Mellish's second-half brace saw Carlisle United climb to fifth after beating visiting League Two leaders Newport County.

Carlisle took the lead through Lewis Alessandra's penalty after Joshua Kayode was fouled by Ryan Haynes.

Mellish rifled into the roof of the Newport net after being played in by Omari Patrick, then added his second.

Newport hit back with two late, quickfire goals from Jamie Devitt and Josh Sheehan but Carlisle held on.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn told BBC Sport Wales:

"The best team won. We were a lot better second half but they probably should have been 3-0 up at half-time.

"We still kept going, kept digging in, kept trying to force the issue and nearly got the equaliser at the end, which probably would have been a little bit harsh on Carlisle.

"We just didn't start. It was a sloppy penalty to give away, they pressed us and we didn't really back ourselves."
