Wrexham beat high-flying Sutton United to secure a third straight win and move into the National League play-off spots.

Kwame Thomas' fine volley put the home side in front before a Ben Goodliffe own goal doubled their lead.

Harry Beautyman and Omar Bugiel had chances for Sutton but substitute Adi Yussuf and a second from Thomas sealed Wrexham's best win of the season.

Wrexham move up to sixth in the table while Sutton stay second.

Both sides went into the game on unbeaten runs, with Wrexham having not lost or conceded a goal in three games while Sutton had not suffered defeat in four matches.

While the opening 15 minutes was end to end, neither side had a clear cut opportunity until Sutton's Bugiel's headed wide

Wrexham went ahead when Paul Rutherford's right-hand cross was converted first time on the volley by Thomas.

Thomas came close to a second with another powerful volley striking the outside of the post, while Elliott Durrell fired wide after trying his luck from long range.

Beautyman had a header saved by home keeper Rob Lainton, before Wrexham doubled their lead before the break when Goodliffe conceded an own goal from Durrell's low free-kick.

Sutton stepped up the pressure after the break with Beautyman's low effort saved by Lainton, who also denied Bugiel.

But it was Wrexham who extended their lead with Yussuf firing home after a fine turn following a long clearance.

Another long clearance from Lainton found Thomas, who headed over the advancing Dean Bouzanis for his second and Wrexham's fourth.

Wrexham manager Dean Keates said:

"We've come back from the enforced break, showed proper character and ground some results out.

"We were relentless in both boxes. We kept a clean sheet and we knew if we kept a clean sheet from the off we'd get opportunities and the forward lads were all outstanding.

"But we won't get too high, regroup and look back at where we've done well and where we need to improve and get ourselves ready for the weekend and a difficult game at Bromley."
