The win moves Queens up to eighth

A clean sheet from 16-year-old goalkeeper Charlie Cowie helped Queen of the South to victory over Raith Rovers as they moved off the bottom of the Scottish Championship.

Cowie was forced to make his debut after Jack Leighfield was injured in the warm up, and made two fine saves in the final 15 minutes as Raith pressed for an equaliser.

Connor Shields opened the scoring in the first-half, and Tommy Goss secured a second win of the season for Queens in stoppage time at Stark's Park.

Allan Johnston's side are up two places to eighth, now two points clear of Arbroath at the foot of the table and level with Alloa Athletic.

Raith, meanwhile, drop to fourth having been overhauled by Dundee.

QoS manager Allan Johnston: "It's been a long-time coming. There were a lot of good performances. Young Charlie the goalkeeper steps in last minute and I thought he was excellent. He made a couple of really good saves and showed good experience for someone so young."

Raith Rovers assistant manager Paul Smith: "A disappointing night for us. I'm not going to criticise the guys because over the course of the season so far we've done really well. We didn't keep the ball well enough and Queen of the South deserved the win."
