Swansea City have ended their interest in signing Michael Obafemi following an injury to the Southampton striker.

The Swans wanted Obafemi on loan until the end of the season but the 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international suffered a muscle injury in training.

Meanwhile, Swansea have recalled Wales Under-21s defender Brandon Cooper from his loan at Newport County.

Swans have several defensive fitness concerns for Saturday's FA Cup third round match at Stevenage.

Former Manchester City centre-back Joel Latibeaudiere is their latest doubt with a calf injury, while Ryan Bennett and Kyle Naughton are also sidelined.

The recall of Cooper, 20, is a big blow for League Two high-flyers Newport.

The Bridgend-born centre-back, who recently signed a contract extension with the Swans until 2023, has made 18 league starts for Mike Flynn's side and has been in impressive form.

Last month Flynn was optimistic of keeping Cooper after "positive conversations" with Swansea but since then the Swans' defensive injury situation has deteriorated.

Cooper will not be able to face Stevenage on Saturday because he has already played in the FA Cup for Newport this season.

Swansea are second in the Championship following Saturday's 2-1 home win over promotion rivals Watford.
