Newport County held off League Two promotion rivals Carlisle United in a hard-fought draw at Rodney Parade.

The result keeps the Exiles in the play-off places in sixth, with Carlisle three points behind in ninth.

The visitors did have the ball in the net but Offrande Zanzala was judged to have fouled Newport goalkeeper Nick Townsend as he jumped for the ball.

Omari Patrick also went close for Carlisle, while Newport's Nicky Maynard and Aaron Lewis had good chances.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn:

"It was a fair result, they edged the first half chance-wise and I thought we were the better team second half.

"We were trying to win it at the end, a couple of different pieces of decision-making and we might have done that.

"But they're a good team, they're very, very good at what they do, they're a tough team to beat fair play to them... they've got pace and look to hit you on the counter."
