Carlisle United moved to within three points of the play-off zone with victory at lowly Southend United, who remain five points adrift of safety.
The visitors opened the scoring when Offrande Zanzala sent a low, 20-yard shot into the bottom left corner.
Southend wasted a golden chance to hit back when Simeon Akinola was brought down by Callum Guy, but Akinola's weak penalty was saved by Paul Farman.
Substitute Gime Toure made sure of victory with a 20-yard effort late on.
Mark Molesley's Southend have now gone six home games without a goal.
