Carlisle United 0-0 Colchester United

Carlisle and Colchester played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Brunton Park on the opening day of the new League Two season.

The Cumbrians started well and Tristan Abrahams lifted a shot over from just inside the area, while Brennan Dickenson also went close soon after.

Lewis Alessandra's shot flew wide and just before the half hour mark, Corey Whelan wastefully side-footed straight at Colchester keeper Shamal George from a very good position, as the hosts pressed.

George then superbly palmed away Rod McDonald's header but Colchester finished the half well and Carlisle keeper Magnus Norman denied Alan Judge's snap-shot, on the stroke of half-time.

Dickenson was denied by a combination of George and Cole Skuse after a swift counter-attack from a Colchester corner, midway through the second half.

George pulled off another vital save to foil Mellish, following a quick Carlisle break before soon after making a superb double stop to deny both Abrahams and Mellish from close range in quick succession, as the spoils were shared.
