Andy Ryan's header gave Hamilton the second-half lead

Relegated Hamilton Academical got their first Scottish Championship win thanks to Lewis Smith's thumping strike at Queen of the South.

Accies led a minute after half-time when Andrew Ryan converted a close-range header.

The advantage didn't last long, though, as Ruari Paton followed up to equalise after Paul McKay struck a post.

Queens' Willie Gibson then rattled an upright, but Smith won it with a 20-yard strike into the bottom corner.

Hamilton are now a point above the Palmerston men, who have started with a win and three defeats.

Queen of the South manager Allan Johnston: "First half we were miles off it. Second half we were much better and deserved more. A draw would have been a fair result."

Hamilton head coach Stuart Taylor: "I'm over the moon to get a first win since taking charge. The lads thoroughly deserved it. All credit to them, they were brilliant."
