Kilmarnock rode their luck to go top of the Scottish Championship with a battling goalless draw at Arbroath.

The hosts had the clearer opportunities and stand-out striker Joel Nouble twice hit the post in an absorbing first half, while James Craigen had a shot cleared off the line by Euan Murray.

Kilmarnock goalkeeper Zach Hemming denied Thomas O'Brien after the break.

When the visitors finally tested Derek Gaston in the final 15 minutes, he superbly saved Oli Shaw's snap-shot.

Kilmarnock climb above Inverness Caledonian Thistle on goal difference prior to Saturday's games, with Arbroath two points adrift in third.

The draw ends Arbroath's four-game league winning streak, while Kilmarnock miss out on a third straight victory.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "I thought we had the better chances and should have won. We missed some easy chances but we proved this won't be an easy place to come.

"I'm proud of my players. This sends a message that we deserve to be third in the league on merit. Let's see if we can get better."

Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright: "Arbroath played well and made it difficult for us. It was a tough night but I was pleased with our attitude.

"I think it's a good point for us. Arbroath keep it simple and ask you constant questions. We can be better on the ball."
