Brentford lost 3-2 at Stoke City in the Championship in October 2020
Brentford reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season after winning at Championship side Stoke City for the first time.
Last season's semi-finalists went ahead when Ivan Toney set up Sergi Canos to drill home following a corner.
Toney followed up his assist with a goal of his own as the forward made it three for the season when he slotted home from 12 yards for a much-changed Brentford side.
Stoke knocked out Watford in the previous round but were unable to add a second Premier League scalp, despite reducing the deficit through a fine finish from the edge of the box by former Bees player Romaine Sawyers.
Brentford, who have made a solid start to life in the Premier League this season, will find out their quarter-final opponents on Saturday.
The Bees had never previously won at Stoke and lost 3-2 in the Championship at the same venue last season before finally securing promotion.
Boss Thomas Frank made eight changes but his side - made to work by Stoke after half-time as the hosts threatened a comeback - produced a thoroughly professional performance.
Brentford are now unbeaten in five league and cup games away from home this season.
Stoke boss Michael O'Neill: "It was a difficult first half for us. We were too passive and conceded two poor goals. We missed tackles for both goals. The reaction in the second half was better.
"We're disappointed to go out."
Brentford boss Thomas Frank: "Generally we played a good game. We controlled the game in and out of possession in the first half and created a lot of chances and pressed with intensity.
"In the second half we became a tiny bit sloppy, but all in all a it was a very good away performance against a good side. I'm very pleased."
