Arbroath 1-1 Queen of the South: Hosts hit back for point

  • Published

Arbroath came from behind at Gayfield to secure a point and deny struggling Queen of the South a first league win in six Scottish Championship outings.

The clearest first-half chance fell to Queens' Innes Cameron, who screwed wide when it looked easier to score, having earlier had a goal ruled offside.

He made amends shortly after the break, netting a diving header from Max Johnston's cross.

Hoever, Arbroath's pressure paid off when Michael McKenna smashed home.

Queens should have regained the lead in the final 10 minutes when Ally Roy played in Cameron, but he drilled a shot past the post.

Second-bottom Queens' lead over Dunfermline Athletic is now down to two points, while Arbroath drop out of the top four on goal difference.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "You could see in the first half they were very happy to get a draw because they were taking their time on all the set-pieces.

"We should have won the game, it shows how far we have come that we are absolutely disappointed to drop points against a full-time side."

Queen of the South manager Allan Johnston: "Performance wise it is miles better than what it has been. We look a bigger goal threat, we are passing the ball better, we have more energy in the team.

"It is just turning those type of performances into wins, but we are going in the right direction."
