Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall said the Kilmarnock penalty award was "a shocker"

Kilmarnock missed the chance to go top of the Championship as Partick Thistle found a late equaliser at Firhill.

Thistle captain Ross Docherty arrowed a terrific low shot in off the post from 20 yards to earn the hosts as deserved share of the spoils.

Oli Shaw had converted from the penalty spot on the hour after his cross hit the arm of Richard Foster.

Kilmarnock nudge up to second place, one point behind leaders Arbroath, while Thistle remain fifth.

Ian McCall's side have lost just once in their last 13 outings and the Glasgow side will feel justice was done after the award of a soft penalty.

Foster's arm was by his side as the ball struck him and the veteran defender was incensed when referee Nick Walsh pointed to the spot.

Either side of the opening goal, Shaw missed two good chances, prodding a loose ball straight at goalkeeper Jamie Sneddon and shooting high and wide when played through by Dan MacKay.

Thistle had been the brighter team in the first half and the Glasgow team finished strongly too.

Zak Rudden and Scott Tiffoney were lively in the opening 45 minutes and Cammy Smith had an effort charged down, while Sneddon made a good early save to deny Blair Alston at the other end.

However, the restricted crowd of 500 at Firhill had something special to cheer when Docherty cracked in a great strike with three minutes of regulation time remaining.

Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall: "The penalty is a shocker. If that's a penalty, the one we had in the first half is more of a penalty. I don't know what Richard is supposed to do. His arm is not in an unnatural position, it's at the side of his body.

"We looked really dominant throughout the game. You score late for a draw and there is relief, but I thought we deserved to win."

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: "On the overall performance, we're glad to come away with a point. When you're in a winning position with so little time left, it's disappointing not to take all three.

"It was a tough match and the surface wasn't the best, but I thought Thistle were better than us, not much better than us in the second half when we got against them a bit more and we didn't give up too many chances and you have to say it's a great finish from Docherty."
