Record signing Ollie Palmer scored on his debut as Wrexham maintained their promotion challenge with victory over Grimsby.

Palmer, signed from AFC Wimbledon for £300,000, slotted home after Paul Mullin had been denied.

Grimsby's Max Crocombe denied Mullin again before Rob Lainton made a double save to keep out headers from Shaun Pearson and Luke Waterfall.

Max Cleworth missed a chance to score a second, firing over from close range.

Wrexham are sixth in the National League, three points behind leaders Stockport County, while Grimsby are 10th.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said:

"It was a hard fought victory. It was a big win for us tonight.

"We knew we'd have to be at our best in terms of determination to get the win and I was pleased with the shift and the effort the lads have put in across the board.

"It was a big ask of Ollie to play tonight because we didn't get the deal done until late afternoon yesterday and hadn't met his team-mates until tonight.

"But I felt it was important we got him out there and I thought he put in a good effort."
