Swansea City have signed Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Hannes Wolf on loan for the rest of the season.

Austria Under-21 international Wolf, 22, has played eight times for the Bundesliga club this season, but has not featured since October.

He has been allowed to leave Germany in search of regular football.

"I think he'll bring assists, goals and a real threat. He can play anywhere for us and have an impact," said Swansea head coach Russell Martin.

"He can play in numerous positions in attack, is a fantastic athlete, and out of possession he's incredible, what he does for the team."

Wolf is a welcome addition to Swansea's attacking options, particularly amid doubts over Jamie Paterson's future.

He trained with Swansea for the first time on Thursday and could make his debut against Preston in the Championship on Saturday.

Martin was alerted to Wolf's potential availability by the player's agent.

"He is someone I've dealt with previously and he said it probably won't happen, it's probably unlikely because of the player's pedigree and where he's at at the moment," Martin explained.

"But he said he might be available. Somehow the deal has been made to happen which is great.

"Financially it's not outside what we can spend. Hannes is someone else who has had to sacrifice money to be here with the situation at his club.

"He's only here because of the style of play we presented to him, he was really excited and he decided this is the place he wants to play football.

"I think with the amount of competition we beat off, not just in England, but from top leagues across Europe, it's fantastic for us and I'm really excited by it. Hopefully he shows his pedigree whilst he's here."

Wolf has previously played for RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.

Martin, meantime, has admitted Swansea were interested in MK Dons midfielder Matt O'Riley, who is set to join Celtic for a fee believed to be around £1.5m.

"I love Matt. I congratulated him, it's a fantastic move to a huge football club," Martin said.

"I'm disappointed we don't get the chance to work with him again but I'm delighted for him.

"He was a target for us, of course. He fits the profile and a player we've worked with. But there were other clubs looking at him as well. I don't feel let down or angry, it's where we are at. I'm comfortable with that."
