Ipswich Town midfielder Sam Morsy has been handed a four-match Football Association ban for violent conduct.

The 30-year-old Egypt international was charged with a breach of FA Rule E1.1 following his altercation with Accrington Stanley's Ethan Hamilton at Portman Road on Saturday.

"Losing our captain is obviously a massive blow," said Ipswich chief executive Mark Ashton.

The suspension starts with Tuesday night's trip to AFC Wimbledon.

Assuming all the fixtures go ahead as scheduled, Morsy will also miss Saturday's trip to Sheffield Wednesday, the home game against Gillingham on 5 February and the Tuesday night game at Doncaster on 8 February - and will not return to action until Ipswich go to Milton Keynes on 12 February.

Monday's FA statement first announcing the charge said: "The midfielder's behaviour in the 27th minute was not seen by the match officials. But it was caught on camera, and allegedly constitutes violent conduct."

Ashton added: "We are extremely disappointed with the decision from the regulatory commission, to which we cannot appeal. But myself, Kieran McKenna and the coaching staff have full belief in the rest of the squad during the period that Sam will now be unavailable to help deliver the results that we want."

Ipswich won the game 2-1 to climb to ninth in the League One table.
