Arbroath's David Gold was denied by the woodwork

Arbroath failed to fully capitalise on Scottish Championship leaders Kilmarnock's slip-up as they were held 0-0 at Partick Thistle.

It leaves Arbroath four points behind Kilmarnock, who drew at Morton on Friday, with four games to play.

Dick Campbell's side came closest when David Gold, on for the injured Chris Hamilton, hit the inside of a post in the first half.

Campbell was cautioned earlier when the challenge on Hamilton went unpunished.

It led to a long delay with Hamilton taken off on a stretcher in some distress.

Thistle's main threat came from their focal point Brian Graham, who had a header saved, another float narrowly over the bar, then one tipped away superbly by Derek Gaston.

Kevin Holt should have scored with another close-range header that arrowed narrowly over the bar before Scott Tiffoney went close from similar distance.

For a game of such importance it was a shame it was played out on such a terrible surface with both sides struggling to create chances.

The home side halted a run of four straight defeats to stay on course for a play-off place in fourth, with a three-point lead over Raith Rovers who have a game in hand.

Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall: "What I feel inside I can't say but it was a hard game against a good team. We had to play a certain way but I think they had one worldie that hit the post while we had a lot of good chances.

"Their goalie did really well. I thought we deserved to win.

Arbroath assistant Ian Campbell: "There was not a lot of football you can play though the pitch was better than I've seen it.

"In terms of clear cut chances we probably deserved to nick it. It's a well-earned point but we were tremendous. The season is not finished."
