Wrexham missed out on National League automatic promotion with a final-day defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge, who fell just short of the play-off places.

Regardless, Stockport beat Halifax to clinch the title and take matters out of second-place Wrexham's hands.

Junior Morias blasted Dagenham ahead before Paul McCallum headed a second.

Matt Robinson added a late third but the home side finished one point adrift of the play-offs as Chesterfield drew with Woking to stay seventh.

As for Wrexham, they must earn promotion via the play-offs if they are to return to League Two for the first time since 2008.

Phil Parkinson's men, along with Solihull Moors in third, get a bye to the semi-finals. Those one-leg ties will be played on 28 and 29 May, with the final at London Stadium on 5 June.

Wrexham had started well at Dagenham with Paul Mullin forcing Elliot Justham into a save, but news soon filtered through to Victoria Road that Paddy Madden had given Stockport an early lead.

That made the Welsh side's improbable task even more daunting and a Daggers team with plenty to play for themselves made life difficult for their opponents, with Brandon Comley having a shot saved by Christian Dibble.

The Wrexham keeper had a busy first half, denying Robinson and McCallum - who also had a goal disallowed for a push on Dibble.

Dagenham's pressure was eventually rewarded 10 minutes into the second half as Morias found himself in space in the penalty area and fired powerfully into the far corner.

To make matters worse for Wrexham, within seconds Stockport doubled their lead over Halifax to effectively finish the title race.

Parkinson's side kept searching for a way back - Ollie Palmer forcing Justham into a fine save - but Dagenham sealed victory as McCallum headed in at the back post.

Robinson struck in the 90th minute to add to Dagenham's celebrations, though they were muted by Chesterfield's goalless draw with Woking.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson: "It was a tough day for us. We weren't at our best and I thought Dagenham played well.

"Stockport's second goal filtering around the place knocked the wind out of our sails in the second half.

"As much as you don't want that to happen, it is understandable as well.

"But we're ready to finish the season in style. Today wasn't our day but we've got some really big games coming up now."
