Chesterfield 2-0 Wrexham: Jeff King sets Spireites on way to comfortable win

  • Published

Chesterfield set an early promotion marker by inflicting a first loss of the season on rivals Wrexham.

They took an early lead when wing-back Jeff King surged down the right before cutting inside to score, with Akwasi Asante hitting the post soon after.

The Spireites doubled their lead when Armando Dobra robbed the ball off dawdling Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard and teed up Ollie Banks to score.

Rattled Wrexham responded after half-time but could not find a way through.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "We conceded two avoidable goals, simple as that. We started the game well, I thought we were in control.

"But the first goal we let the full-back run - we spoke about that yesterday, how key that was to the way Chesterfield play - and the second one is just deal with the ball, no need to go back to Mark (keeper Howard) who then has to deal with it.

"So we've handed a team a two-goal start when really we were doing okay in the game."
