Martyn Waghorn's penalty three minutes from time lifted Coventry off the bottom of the Championship with victory over Sheffield United.

It gave the Sky Blues just their third win of the season and continued their recent revival with those three wins coming in their past five games.

Defeat extended United's recent slump as they missed the chance to go second in the Championship and have now gone five games without a win.

Twice they were denied by the frame of the goal in the second half as first Ollie Norwood struck the bar with a free-kick before Oli McBurnie's shot from outside the box hit the post.

But City won it as Chris Basham's foul gave Waghorn his chance from the spot and he made no mistake for his first goal of the season.

Until then it had reached the 70th minute for the hosts to force a save from United goalkeeper Adam Davies before the returning Gustavo Hamer shot over the bar.

In a drab first half neither side managed a shot on target but Blades left-back Rhys Norrington-Davies suffered a serious-looking injury.

The Wales international pulled up with what appeared to be a leg muscle problem after only 10 minutes and was stretchered off.

His replacement, James McAtee, was perhaps fortunate to stay on the field himself as he lunged wildly at Coventry winger Fankaty Dabo but was only shown a yellow card.

Dabo himself could easily have received a second booking after half-time but escaped further sanction for a foul on Ben Osborn.
