Grant Gillespie added Morton's second on the rebound from his saved spot-kick

Morton continued their sparkling Scottish Championship form by thrashing Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The hosts rise to second - only off the top on goal difference in a four-way tie also featuring Inverness - after a blistering first-half performance.

Robbie Muirhead's shot squirmed through the grasp of Mark Ridgers and Grant Gillespie rammed in the rebound after his penalty was saved.

David Carson headed into his own net before Cameron Blues hit a late fourth.

Dougie Imrie's men have now taken 13 points from the last 15 on offer and kept four consecutive clean sheets.

Former Celtic and Hibs defender Efe Ambrose - signed two days previously - slotted in seamlessly, winning the penalty and becoming an instant hero with Morton fans who sang his name amid an accomplished debut.

Inverness - who substituted goalkeeper Ridgers at the interval - rarely threated as their winless run stretched to three games.

Morton manager Dougie Imrie: "I'm delighted. We want to make Cappielow a fortress. I'm so proud of my boys and everything they've given, so hopefully we keep that going."

Inverness manager Billy Dodds: "We were well beaten. If you defend the way we did and you don't take chances when you put the ball in the box you're not going to win any games."
