Scotland 2-1 Philippines: Rachel Corsie goal secures much-needed win
- Published
Scotland edged past Philippines to secure their first Pinatar Cup win after a much-improved second half performance.
Pedro Martinez Losa's side led at the break through Lauren Davidson's deflected effort, but were blunt in attack, having just two shots in the first 45 minutes in Spain.
The introduction of Real Madrid's Caroline Weir at half-time brought some much needed class, and she teed up fellow substitute Rachel Corsie from a corner to double Scotland's lead.
Ma Serrano pulled one back for Philippines late on with a free-kick, but Scotland saw out the remainder of the game to keep their hopes of glory alive.
The opening exchanges were distinctly forgettable, with neither side threatening in any meaningful sense until the 39th minute when Davidson cut inside of the right wing and fired past Olivia McDaniel for her first Scotland goal.
Weir's close control and clever passing created more openings in the second half though, and she fizzed in the corner that wrapped up the win.
The flight of the ball caught the Philippines defence completely unawares and Corsie couldn't miss from inside the six-yard box.
Scotland continued to dominate possession, but will be disappointed to concede late on, Serrano firing past Jenna Fife after Jenna Clark's clumsy foul.
The Scots will now play Wales into their final game of the competition on Tuesday (14:05 GMT).
Player of the Match - Caroline Weir
She may have only played a half, but it was her calming influence that brought Scotland out of their shell and opened up the stubborn opposition defence.
