Ozan Tufan scored a hat-trick to help Hull City secure a first victory of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.

The away side took the lead when Juan Delgado converted Dominic Iorfa's low cross via a deflection from a Tigers defender, but Hull equalised in first half stoppage-time through Tufan's penalty after Lee Gregory took Jacob Greaves out in the penalty area.

Tufan gave the hosts the lead with a fantastic strike from range and then completed his treble with a cool finish inside the area.

Sub Aaron Connolly tapped into an empty net to wrap up the win after cutting out Michael Ihiekwe's pass in his own area before Michael Smith scored an injury-time consolation for the Owls.

Hull boss Liam Rosenior was unhappy with his side's efforts in midweek as they fell to a defeat by League Two Doncaster in the EFL Cup, but they were in utterly dominant form against the promoted Owls.

Wednesday took the lead against the run of play with their first shot on target but that was about as good as it got for them on a day where influential skipper Barry Bannan was subbed off with an injury at the break.

Tufan was gifted the opportunity for his first when veteran Gregory clumsily felled Greaves in the area from a cross, but his second was a goal of real class.

The Turkey international rolled the ball out of his feet with his studs and then curled a sumptuous 25-yarder into the top corner.

Connolly's goal, after Tufan had completed his first hat-trick in English football, summed up Wednesday day - the Irishman cut out Ihiekwe's attempted pass and tapped the ball into the open goal.

Smith scored with the away side's second shot on target in time added on, but this was a day to forget for them as they slid to a second league defeat of the season.

A home game against Preston awaits the Owls next Saturday, while Hull travel to Blackburn.

Hull City boss Liam Rosenior:

(On Tufan) He deserves it and I'm so happy for him.

"The reason the quality is there is because the fitness is now there - that sums up his attitude.

"He is working so hard. He's pressing so hard from the front along with Liam (Delap). And when you work so hard in life, you get the rewards.

"I've got to give the players all the credit in the world - they were fantastic from start to finish."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz:

"The second half we were very far away from what I want.

"I didn't see the balance for a consistent performance, but the situation right now is to control emotions.

"We need to control the moments and we need to improve with duels - both in offence and defence.

"We needed to improve on many things, but every day we get better and better and get closer, but we need to find a solution.

"We need to improve about clean sheets and defensive situations, but this is my job. They called me for this situation, and I will give 100%."
