Salford City ended a six-match losing run due to a Declan Drysdale own goal.

Salford led when Matthew Lund headed in Declan John's cross following a corner at the near post and nearly had another when Stephen Mallan hit the post.

Bryn Morris shot Newport level when he collected James Waite's pass, but late in the first half Salford led again when Drysdale deflected Kelly N'Mai's shot into his own net.

Newport were denied an equaliser when Will Evans' effort was flagged offside.

Salford move up to 20th, just a point behind visitors Newport County in 17th.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan said: "We scored a 'second' goal that was a very legitimate goal, I don't see what the issue is with it... it's not offside.

"We're absolutely fuming, decisions like that don't belong in the game. Somebody needs to look at the decision, somebody needs to give us an honest explanation as to why the goal was disallowed.

"We were excellent but again I'm stood here and I'm talking about two basic, silly, stupid errors that have cost us the game. You don't make them errors you win the game today."
