Harrogate Town goalkeeper Mark Oxley claims a cross as Newport County's Will Evans challenges

Harrogate Town held off a Newport County fightback to leapfrog their hosts in the League Two table.

George Thomson gave the visitors the lead when he was teed up by Matty Daly before shooting home from outside the box.

Harrogate doubled their lead when Thomson's corner was converted at the back post by Anthony O'Connor.

Will Evans got Newport back into the game when he turned in Lewis Payne's low cross but Harrogate held on.

Harrogate now have 16 points and rise to 15th in the table, with Newport two points behind and having dropped to 19th.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan said: "Did we deserve a point? Yes, we probably did but you've got to do more - we didn't turn up in the first half, you can't perform like that in the first half and expect to take anything out of the game.

"Had [Aaron] Wildig's header gone in and not hit the post we would have got out of jail; I'm not sure we deserved anything out of that game.

"That's where we are at this moment in time, those things are going against us, we're shooting ourselves in the foot. We're showing a naivety, showing our inexperience and it's hard to take."
