Elliot Lee's ninth goal of the season gave Wrexham a late win over Sutton United

Substitute Elliot Lee's stunning volley secured a late win for Wrexham to deny League Two bottom side Sutton United.

Ryan Barnett fed Paul Mullin, who struck a superb effort from 20 yards on the angle to put Wrexham ahead.

But poor defending saw Harry Smith pull it back for the unmarked Aiden O'Brien to bring Sutton level.

Substitute Jacob Mendy struck the crossbar before Lee volleyed from outside the penalty area for a winner a minute from time.

Wrexham, who move up to third, were made to work hard for their win by a Sutton side who remain bottom of the table.

Phil Parkinson's side are three points behind second placed Notts County, the team they go to on Saturday and who beat Newport County 3-0.

Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin said:

"We got the early goal, which we needed - never really capitalised on that but we had some good play, good patient play without creating the chances that we wanted to really.

"Second half they went up a notch to be fair to them and won a few battles around the pitch which we won first half and got the all important equaliser which made the evening difficult for us.

"To come up with such a quality goal at the end to get the points for us was a big relief. You won't see a purer strike."
