Shrewsbury Town striker Kieran Phillips will be out of action for three months after undergoing surgery on his knee.

Head coach Matt Taylor has revealed that Phillips has had an exploratory operation following his last appearance against Cambridge on 14 October.

Taylor told BBC Radio Shropshire that losing the Huddersfield loanee was "A real blow. Not the news we wanted".

Phillips has yet to find the net in 10 appearances this season, although he has only started three games.

"He's going to be out for three months," said Taylor. "He's had an exploratory procedure into his knee. When I spoke to him, he was sat in bed on a machine that was moving his knee.

"It leaves us slightly bare at the top of the pitch but that's nothing new for us. We know we haven't done well enough scoring goals."

Shrewsbury are 18th in League One, having scored only seven goals in 15 games so far - the second lowest total in the division.

They switch attention to the FA Cup on Saturday with a first round home tie against League Two side Colchester United

Despite the loss of Phillips, Taylor does have Luton Town loanee Elliot Thorpe available for the first time after a back injury.

Jordan Shipley is back in the squad for this first time since late August after a knee problem.
