Crewe Alexandra have signed Lewis Leigh on loan for the rest of the season from Championship side Preston North End.

The midfielder spent the first half of the season out on loan with National League side Bromley, where he made 13 appearances, helping them to second in the table.

Leigh, 20, is the Alex's first signing of the January transfer window.

He joins a side with hopes of an immediate return to League One after last season's relegation.

Lee Bell's side are fifth in League Two, in the play-off zone and just five points off Mansfield Town and Wrexham in the latter two of the three automatic promotion places.

Leigh's debut could come at home to mid-table Swindon Town on Saturday.

He has made four first team appearances for Preston, the most recent being in August against Salford City in the Carabao Cup.
