FA Cup: Birmingham City 2-1 Hull City highlights

Tony Mowbray enjoyed his first win as Birmingham City boss as substitute Koji Miyoshi's last-minute winner sent Blues into an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Leicester City at the expense of fellow Championship side Hull City.

Miyoshi was one of five substitutions made by Mowbray after 63 minutes with the home side trailing 1-0 to Jason Lokilo's first-half goal.

The changes quickly paid dividends when Matt Ingram could only parry Miyoshi's initial shot and fellow sub Jay Stansfield controlled the rebound well before firing in.

The first tie between the sides 10 days ago finished 1-1 and the replay looked destined to mirror that game before the Japanese sub took advantage of poor defending to finish at the second attempt.

This was a match between two teams struggling for form in the second tier, albeit at different ends of the table.

Blues made seven changes from the 2-2 draw with Swansea on Saturday while Tigers boss Liam Rosenior, mindful of their trip to fellow play-off hopefuls Sunderland on Friday, changed his entire XI from the team that started the 2-1 defeat by Norwich.

The Tigers took an early lead when Billy Sharp capitalised on a defensive error before teeing up James Furlong, who squared for Lokilo to score his first for the club.

Jordan James went close with a fine curling effort as Blues improved after the break but it was the introduction of the five subs that totally altered the course of the game.

In contrast Hull, who gave debuts to three players in the game, tired badly as the game wore on and it was perhaps fatigue that played a part in the sloppy play that saw them concede a throw-in deep in their own half that eventually culminated in Miyoshi's winner.

Mowbray will hope this success, just a third win in 18 games in all competitions for Birmingham since Wayne Rooney took over from John Eustace in October, can give his side an injection of confidence going into Saturday's Midlands derby with Stoke.

Birmingham boss Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio WM:

"I wanted to see everyone in my first two games and we tried to do that. There was a lack of the real intensity we wanted to play at in the first half and being able to change half the team gave us that injection it needed.

"We brought quality on to the pitch and it got the job done.

"It's hard to put down a total blueprint of how you want to play in three or four days.

"It's great to score late goals, particularly in cup matches to win, so let's keep going."

Hull City boss Liam Rosenior told BBC Radio Humberside:

"We keep shooting ourselves in the foot from positions of complete control. I said to the players after the game that this has to be the last time we are unlucky this season.

"My job was to try and get this team into the play-offs and we are a point outside that. We are in a poor run of form and we've got injuries and players away but my job is to steer us through this.

"I'm aware this is a results business but, at the same time, if anyone tells me we're not in a good place, every Championship team goes through difficult patches and I will stick with our identity and style.

"I think Matt Ingram will be disappointed with the goals. His overall performance was very good but it's just moments."
