Coventry City say they are "shocked and saddened" by a racist gesture directed at midfielder Kasey Palmer.

The incident happened during their 2-1 Championship win over next-to-bottom Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Wednesday confirmed the gesture was made by someone in the stands and that anyone "found culpable" would face the "strictest possible sanctions".

"We absolutely condemn the abuse reported by Kasey Palmer," said Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

"We stand together with Coventry City in our clear stance that there is no place in football or society for such appalling behaviour."

Ben Sheaf scored two goals for the Sky Blues, who were beaten in last season's second-tier play-off final at Wembley, before Josh Windass replied for Wednesday.

Coventry owner Doug King said the club would provide Palmer with whatever support he requires.

He continued: "There is no place for this in football or society and we support Sheffield Wednesday and the authorities in taking the strongest possible action."
