FA Trophy: 'Outstanding' Peterborough Sports into quarter-finals

As well as Kidderminster, Michael Gash's former clubs include Cambridge United, York City and Barnet

Peterborough Sports co-manager Michael Gash was delighted to "make history" as his goal put them into the FA Trophy quarter-finals for the first time.

Gash scored in stoppage time to give them a 1-0 win over Kidderminster Harriers, one of his former clubs.

And it earned them a trip to another National League side, Gateshead, who beat Hereford 1-0, on 9 March.

"We had to make sure we were on it and from the first minute to the 95th we were outstanding," said Gash.

"People might say it wasn't Kiddy's strongest team out there, but they're a full-time outfit, it's a squad game and they've got good enough players to come and play."

The Turbines are 16th in National League North and were underdogs against a Harriers side that had won their four previous league games under boss Phil Brown.

But they sealed victory in dramatic fashion as Kaine Felix surged down the right from his own half and cut the ball back for 37-year-old Gash to fire home against opponents he played for from 2013 to 2015.

"That goal came from Kaine Felix's mentality, his attitude, his desire, not only to win the ball but then go 70 yards up the pitch with a player trying to pull his shirt," Gash told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"He could easily have gone down and taken a free-kick but he had the mindset of 'I can get right up the pitch here' and thankfully it's just fallen onto my right foot, I moved it to my left and then just hit it low and hard.

"There's no better feeling in football than scoring goals and winning games. That's the icing on the cake for me."

He continued: "It's a great feeling to make history with Peterborough Sports. There's a few lads in there that have done it [before], when we got promoted into the National League. To do it with myself and (co-manager) Luke [Steele] in charge is absolutely fantastic."

He added: "It's a quarter-final, you're two wins away from Wembley. That's something to whet the appetite a little bit."

Kidderminster boss Brown, whose former clubs include Derby County, Hull City, Preston North End and Southend United, had no complaints about the result.

"Have they put enough effort and energy into the game? Yes. Did we have enough quality or class to outwit the opposition? The answer's no," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Harriers must now devote their full attention to avoiding relegation from the National League, in which they are two points from safety with 14 games to go.

Brown added: "We haven't turned the corner. There's not one person at the football club thinks we've turned the corner, thinks we've cracked it. It's my job to make sure people don't think that way."
