Next Aberdeen manager: Who do fans want as next permanent appointment?
- Published
For the fourth time in three years, Aberdeen are searching for a new manager.
Since the long reign of Derek McInnes ended in March 2021, Stephen Glass, Jim Goodwin and Barry Robson have all come and gone.
Peter Leven and, more notably, Neil Warnock have also held the reins on a temporary basis, but the Englishman's shock exit last weekend means the focus is suddenly back on chairman Dave Cormack and who he opts for next.
Interviews are being held this week, and Cormack needs to get this appointment correct.
Aberdeen fans' patience is wearing thin with their chairman and Cormack dare not get this one wrong. But who would Dons fans go for if they were choosing their new boss?
We asked them, and this is a selection of their verdicts...
Lewis, Aberdeen: Has to be a foreign manager with a Scottish assistant. Typical Glasgow-based media are punting the usual Scottish merry-go-round rubbish.
Gary, Penicuik: How can it go so wrong in the space of four years under Cormack?! This really is his last chance to turn the club around before we become the laughing stock of Scottish football again. We have such a good squad, but something is missing. I know there are some Dons fans that don't want him, but for me it has to be Neil Lennon.
Marti, Aberdeen: If it's Lennon then I know a lot of people won't be back as I heard lots of disgruntled opinions about him on Saturday. We can't take a chance with [Mark] Fotheringham, it needs to be someone who either is proven in Scottish football or go abroad. Cormack NEEDS to get this one right or walk himself.
Anonymous: I would like Neil Lennon as the next manager though I have a feeling he is not Cormack's first choice. Any past history with Celtic is silly and Neil seems to want the job.
Joe, Barnet: Son of Fergie. Darren Ferguson is the man for the manager's job. Proven managerial record, knows the expectations and would relish the challenge. Surely one to consider. Forget Lennon - Celtic through and through.
Anonymous, Aberdeen: Darren Ferguson would be worth a gamble if he would come!
Mark, Sunderland: Neil Lennon or bring back Derek McInnes.
Scott, Elgin: Derek McInnes or Tony Docherty. I would also like if it was Steve Clarke (but doubtful if he'd take it) - but please please not Neil Lennon!
Sandy, Elgin: Get the humble pie out of the freezer and grovel to Derek McInnes and give him the money the other managers got. Definitely not Neil Lennon.
Gordon, Highlands: We need a proper football coach who understands modern styles of play and can procure players who fit the team pattern. Fotheringham's CV looks excellent, let's give him a try. If not, Michael O'Neill has coached some good sides. Not Stephen Robinson after the Goodwin fiasco.
Kieran, Edinburgh: I would like the Bodo Glimt manager [Kjetil Knutsen] but that's unlikely. I think a foreign manager could do well.
Arch, Aberdeen: Fotheringham for manager? Good grief, No! His claim to having a better CV than three previous Dons managers is a bit thin when you realise two of them had no previous record as full-time first-team managers and the other's record was very ordinary. My CV's that good. He comes across as an arrogant loudmouth. Michael Beale springs to mind.
Chris, Aberdeen: Not Lennon... after Celtic his record is a litany of failures. Alex Neil if he'll come. Stephen Robinson has done very well at St Mirren but they are not Aberdeen. A European manager - perhaps Spanish or German springs to mind. Lots of choices outside of Lennon - and better ones.
Anita: Get in Neil Lennon as manager and bring back Scott Brown as his assistant.
George, Huntly: Bring in Dick and Ian Campbell. Lots of experience in what it takes to get the best out of players to make a team.
Ross, Aberdeen: Would love to have Ricardo Rodriguez - we have been previously linked with him.
David, Galashiels: Fotheringham is being considered as the German consultancy report recommended German or Austrian experienced candidates, but his record is abysmal. Please not Lennon either - and never [Frank] Lampard. Like recent players, it may be best to look at younger candidates from smaller, northern European countries.
Anonymous: The Dons need to bring in a foreign coach, someone like Christian Titz [Magdeburg manager].
Or could the planets be aligning for...
RS Tornway: Cormack is very canny. He's been waiting patiently to get the right man. It's obvious to anyone. Jurgen Klopp has been in training all his life for the big job.
