Ipswich Town full-back Leif Davis believes their current squad has the potential to be even better than the one which won promotion from the Championship with 96 points two years ago.

Town have drawn both games 1-1 - against Birmingham City and Southampton - at the start of the new campaign following last season's relegation from the Premier League.

But Davis said they still have good players in every position despite the recent big-money departures of Omari Hutchinson and Nathan Broadhead.

"The team's very strong and we'll get there - it'll take time, but 100% we'll start getting the results," he told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"People who aren't on the pitch for 90 [minutes] will come on and do a job, that was a big part of when we won [promotion from] the Championship last time, late goals from subs and I think that will be a big part of this year.

"The team we've got now is probably the strongest we've had, we've just got to stick together and work together as a team - people will come and go, that's their choice, but the players that come in know they have to do the job to fill a role."

In 2023-24, Ipswich went into the season as virtual unknowns in the second tier, having been promoted from League One in the previous campaign.

This time, however, they are a side looking to bounce back at the first attempt after finding the step up to the Premier League tough last season.

"It's all going to take time, you can't just click your fingers and everything falls into place," said Davis.

"This year the pressure is on us, they see us as a big team in every game now but the squad morale is top and there's people in the team that know what they have to do, they block out the noise.

"It's early doors, only two games in, there's still 44 games left for the season but we'll get there."

The 25-year-old was critical of his own level of performance in the top flight, contributing only a couple of assists, compared to 18 in the Championship.

He wants to regain his best from and be a more vocal presence in the team with 126 appearances now behind him.

"I've probably played the most games out of everyone in the last three years I've been here, so I've got to do everything I can to keep the team pushing," Davis said.

"I used to be quite quiet but now I've stepped up and I need to start taking charge, especially in the backline."

He added: "Last year I didn't think I was good enough and I want to get back to the level I know I can be, what I was like in the Championship last time.

"I'm fully committed to being an Ipswich Town player, I love it here, I want to do everything I can to get the club back to the Premier League and improve every day."
