Manchester United are on the verge of agreeing a long-term deal with promising young defender Godwill Kukonki.

The 17-year-old was named on the bench on six occasions by United head coach Ruben Amorim last season.

Kukonki is still to make his senior competitive bow but did feature in both games of the club's post-season tour of Asia.

United have been in negotiations with the England youth international for a number of months, with club sources believing Kukonki has a big future despite finding his route to the first team clogged up by the arrival of Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.

Kukonki is likely to feature for England at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar in November and it is thought he will remain with United this season rather than go out on loan.
